This is a guide to the Greater Boston area through the lens of the
nine seminaries, theological schools, and university divinity schools
that comprise the educational consortium known as The Boston Theological
Institute. There are, of course, many "Bostons" depending
upon the lens by which you view the city, its environs, and its history.
Boston's religious history in particular has undergirded and helped
to shape regional and national history, and many issues which became
important in the history of the churches and the manner of religious
education which developed over time in the US and elsewhere–some of
which are with us still–arose or were debated first in Boston. By
visiting the nine schools that comprise the BTI, and their surrounding
neighborhoods, you will come to appreciate better not only this history,
but the nature of the debate and conflicts that continue to shape
American religious life.
